Marcus Smart
Marcus Osmond Smart is a Boston Celtics basketball player. He was born March 6th, 1994, in Texas. He went to high school in Texas, as well. In high school, he played on three state championship teams and was named Rookie of the Year. Marcus chose to attend Oklahoma State University, where he played point guard (guard who runs the offense) for two seasons. In his first season, he averaged 10 points and 4 assists per game; in his second season, Marcus averaged 17 points and 4 assists per game.
In 2014, Marcus declared for the NBA draft (when players choose to become professional). Marcus was drafted sixth overall by the Boston Celtics.
In his rookie year, Marcus averaged 7 points and 3 assists per game. This past season (2015-2016), Marcus averaged 9 points per game with 3 assists on average - plus 2 steals each game on average!
Smart was named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year on April 18, 2022.
Although not a high percentage shooter, Smart is aggressive on offense and defense. He often guards opposing players taller than him, using physicality to make them uncomfortable, often causing turnovers or missed shots. Over his years in the league, his three-point shooting has improved to the point where he's a league-average three-point threat. Smart is widely considered to be one of the best defenders in the entire NBA, regardless of position, due to his fierce nature, strength, hands, and basketball IQ.
